10 Questions ...

... asked of Debra Thornton

Profession: I was lots of things, including a teacher and a manager of a swimming-pool distribution center

Dog-sport involvement: I started in dog shows much later than most. My first breed was Newfoundlands. The most wonderful breed in the world!

Hometown: Wilmington, Ohio

Astrological sign: Virgo

1. Do you have any dog-show superstitions?

I do have a superstition if showing: Never wear red, because you’ll end up in second place!

2. TV-show guilty pleasure?

“Ninja Warrior.” Wouldn’t it be great to do what those women and men do?!

3. If you were president of AKC for one day, what would you do?

If I was the president of the AKC for a day, I would advertise the value of a purebred dog. Not once, but all day. Explain why a purebred is better, using facts. I don’t think many people understand the work that goes into breeding a litter. The dedication to testing and raising a healthy litter goes a long way toward understanding our dogs. Also, showing and explaining all the things that can be done with your dog to make them truly part of the family.

4. Most valued material possession?

The soft jacket my mother used to wear. I feel close to her when I wear it.

5. What is something no one would guess about you?

At one time, I plumbed swimming pools and instructed construction crews about building them. I repaired heaters and pumps. I also managed 50 commercial pools in the summer, working with the health department to teach pool chemistry to their people.

6. Who would you compare yourself to?

I have no idea who I would compare myself to … But give me a goal, and I’ll do my best to achieve it.

7. What are you “famous” for?

Me, famous? Not! Half the people don’t know I exist!

8. What website do you visit most often?

The website I use most is Delta. Second, AKC.org.

9. What was more memorable, your most satisfying win or disappointing defeat? And what was it?

My most satisfying win was at the Newfoundland national. My home-bred girl won, and I was back in Monterey, where my Newfoundland adventure began. I think I cried tears of happiness for a full day!

10. What do you wish someone would ask you?

I would like to be asked by the AKC how judges would like to be treated and valued.
