This weekend dog and cat lovers will descend on the Javits Center in New York City to attend MEET THE BREEDS, the hugely successful two-day event that draws upwards of 40,000 attendees. Most if not all Parent Clubs have representatives attending to educate the public about their specific breed. In my opinion, this is the best PR the American Kennel Club has going for it and for the promotion of pure bred dogs. No doubt attending the event will be a few of the Delegates running for the Board of Directors in the upcoming March election. In addition to the three Delegates nominated by the nominating committee two present directors, CARL ASHBY and ALAN KALTER, plus HARVEY WOODING and GAIL LEBARGE, you can now add running from the floor sitting director LEE ARNOLD, a former director, TOM DAVIES, and the former AKC president who was fired, JUDI DANIELS (for those of you who don't remember, JUDI was a board member who voted herself into the presidency, so with one yes she turned from amateur status to professional with a very pricey salary from the Kennel Club). So far there are now seven Delegates vying for the four available seats, with more to come. Shocking news from England, was the unexpected sudden passing of world famous Norfolk terrier breeder ELISABETH MATELL. ELISABETH, whose prefix was Cracknor, was Swedish by birth and British by choice. She was the heir apparent to the late JOY TAYLOR of Nanfan fame. But ELISABETH made a name for herself with breeding of the famous Ch. Cracknor Cause Celebre, a once in lifetime dog, that was top dog all breeds in 2003, two-time Westminster Terrier group winner, 2003 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship best in show and the 2005 Crufts best in show winner owned by PAM BEALE, STEPHANIE INGRAM and ELISABETH. Coco lived with her beloved handlers BETH SWEIGART & PETER GREEN until her passing just one year ago this week. If there is a bright spot in all this, PETER spent the evening before her passing with ELIZABETH at her home. PETER was in Wales to judge best in show at the South Wales dog show. When news of her passing hit the States, PAM BEALE & BETH SWEIGART flew to England to help settle and home the dogs. Congratulations to handler SANTIAGO & WENDY PINTO, who are expecting a baby in a few months time. Multiple group judge EDMUND SLEDZIK passed away on October 9th. Our deepest sympathies to his family. When reporting the recent passing of BENITO VILA, the names of his son and daughter in law SANTIAGO & JANIE VILA and his three grandchildren were inadvertently left out…our apologies. News from the upcoming AKC/Eukanuba dog show will add to their coverage with the streaming and uploading of every best of breed competition. You can view it both days at www.dogchannel.com. Handler RICK KRIEGER has been named as the new president of the Professional Handler's Association. RICK is certainly qualified for the job, for long before he went out on his own, he worked for another PHA member, WENDEL SAMMET. RICK came up through the ranks the old fashioned way by working for a handler, watching and learning before he started his solo career. For those of you who may not know him, he is the nice fellow that directs you to your grooming and/or benching space at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show and more importantly gives you passes to take your dog out of the building and doles out those all important and elusive aisle passes. Good luck RICKY you can count on DOG NEWS for support. Birthday greetings to: AMY BOOTH, STACEY SNYDER, JAMES DEWEY, JR., JOANNE REED, DOT SIMBERLUND, BRIAN MEYER, KITTY BURKE, ANN RAMSBOTTOM-WHITE, CONNIE GERSTNER MILLER, KIMBERLY SILVA GARRETT, HOWARD STONE, ANGELA PORPORA, CHRISTIE SMITH, LISA DEROULET, KATHY HRITZO-HEIMANN, BILLIE PHELPS, JEROME ELLIOTT and the ageless JOHN MANDEVILLE..
