10 Questions ...

... asked of Susan Thibodeaux
Profession: Federal Contracts Manager
Dog-sport involvement: Breeder/Owner/Handler
Hometown: Cocoa, FL
Astrological sign: Libra

1. Do you have any dog-show superstitions?
I never look to see who is judging the group before breed judging is done – I’m sure if I do and I like them it will jinx me from winning Breed LOL

2. TV-show guilty pleasure?
I don’t really like to cook (I am the queen of the microwave), but I watch a lot of cooking shows.

3. If you were president of AKC for one day, what would you do?
I’d start a marketing campaign to put ‘perceived value’ back into the minds of the public regarding purebred dogs.  People used to desire purebred dogs with champion bloodlines, now they think mixed and ‘designer’ dogs are better.  We need to change that!

4. Most valued material possession?

My dogs?  My horse?  I’ll say my grandmother’s engagement ring.  Its tiny, but my grandparents were married 68 years, it’s what it represents.  I never take it off.

5. What is something no one would guess about you?
That when I was little, I was painfully shy.  Being in dogs helped to change that!

6. Who would you compare yourself to?
I learned a long time ago not to compare myself to others, so I really have no idea how to answer this question.

7. What are you “famous” for?
I hope its for promoting my breed, as our numbers are dropping as our breeders are aging out of the sport.  I’m really trying to get the breed better known so more people will consider getting a Toy Fox Terrier. Especially folks younger than me!

8. What are your thoughts on Social Media?
I love to use it to reach people who don’t know about Toy Fox Terriers and to educate that there are good, ethical breeders and about our sport.  It’s also a useful tool to stay in touch with people globally - previously with distance, jobs and raising families, if you didn’t live near them, it was too easy to lose the friendships and connections.  Even my mom, in her 80s and 90s, used social media to stay connected with distant friends and family after she could no longer travel to visit.  Unfortunately, too many use it as keyboard warriors, attacking people and causing division and hate.  It’s especially unfortunate when it happens in our sport.

9. What was more memorable, your most satisfying win or disappointing defeat? And what was it?
My most satisfying win.  When I began with my own dogs in my 20s, I had big dreams and goals but no money,  my initial dogs weren’t very competitive in the ring, so I showed without a lot of success at the beginning. Then I got my first Vizsla.  We were doing okay in the ring and needed just a few singles.  We drove to Philadelphia to show at the AKC Centennial Show in 1984, the largest dog show in AKC’s history.  And we won! I finished Lola’s championship there with her final major under Mrs. Jane Forsyth.  I floated home.  No social media back then – my breeder (an AKC judge) wouldn’t believe I’d won until I showed him the rosettes.  I still have the rosettes, the win picture and the catalog.

10. What do you wish someone  would ask you?
How do I get started in Toy Fox Terriers?
