Juneau,
the American Eskimo Dog
Ch. Silveroaks Juneau Arnold
Breeder & Owner: Ruth Sampson
Exclusive Handler: Randy Benns
Juneau is the top winning American Eskimo Dog in the breed’s ten year history in the AKC. His accomplishments include Seven All Breed Best In Shows, 59 Group Firsts, Best of Breed wins at Westminster and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship and Three Specialty wins, including the inaugural Sand and Sea and back to back National Specialty wins. He has been far ahead of the field as Number One* American Eskimo Dog the last two years and his cumulative group placement to breed wins percentage exceeds 75%.
He is also the first American Eskimo to break into the Non-Sporting Group Top Ten, finishing Number Nine on the 2004 Dog News listing. He has had a great start in 2005 and is currently the Number Two** Non-Sporting Dog.
As amazing as Juneau’s accomplishments are, it is just as miraculous that he is in the ring. Several unlikely events had to happen. His breeder and owner, Ruth Sampson, originally sold this puppy to a family as a possible junior handler’s dog. His handler, Randy Benns, was successfully showing a miniature American Eskimo Dog for a large kennel and expected that relationship to continue indefinitely. As an eskie breeder, I had never had an interest in campaigning a dog in AKC. And finally Randy Benns and I had never met.
But the young girl decided junior handling was not for her. Her father offered to sell the puppy back to me. Shortly before then I had been persuaded to have some of my dogs shown, including Juneau’s Dam, Imp. Ultimately Imp and I found our way to Randy, who was now able to take on an eskie. Randy later saw a picture of Juneau and recognized his potential. Juneau had been handled by several other professionals but no one had recognized how good he could be. Randy and Juneau met and bonded. Thus began this team’s amazing climb.
And there may be more to come from Juneau… Last year his first litter, born January 1, 2004 hit the show ring. One finished in the 6-9 puppy class and the other two in the 9-12 classes. Number One son has two Group Placements in the three weekends he’s been shown in 2005. On the third weekend he went First Award of Merit to his father’s Best of Breed at the National Specialty.
As the breeder, I’m particularly proud that Juneau has been such a wonderful representative of this breed. He has captured the attention of Judges and the dog world in general and is helping eskies to be more recognized in the ring. We’re also grateful to the many people who have helped make this possible.
Juneau is a laid back dog and takes all the traveling in stride. He can be seen in his crate lying on his back with four paws in the air. But he continually surprises us with his sense of fun and quirky personality. We love him. For many reasons.
