A Modest Proposal
In response to AKC raising its event fees, I propose that the AKC develop its own nationwide dog-event entry service online with real-time results.
Proposal to Develop an AKC-Managed Nationwide Online Dog Event Entry System
1. Problem Statement
The current system of relying on multiple, independent superintendents to manage dog show entries with antiquated software programs creates numerous inefficiencies and inconsistencies:
Exhibitors must navigate different websites, formats and rules for each superintendent.
Data-entry errors can result in dogs being placed in the wrong classes, ownership records being incorrect, and eligibility issues being overlooked.
Suspended exhibitors or dogs may unintentionally (or intentionally) enter events, undermining fairness and AKC rule enforcement.
Printed catalogs are a burden and expense to clubs, become outdated immediately, and often contain inaccuracies.
Reduce entry fees for BRED BY Adult & Puppy Classes for BREEDER OF MERIT participants.
2. Proposed Solution
The AKC should develop and manage its own centralized, nationwide online dog-event entry platform directly linked to the AKC registration database. This system would:
Automatically verify eligibility – Cross-check each entry against the AKC’s suspension list to prevent ineligible participation.
Pull accurate registration data – Dog name, ownership, breeder and registration number would be auto-filled from the AKC database, eliminating manual errors.
Provide a single access point – Exhibitors would use one standardized interface for all AKC events nationwide.
Offer a live online catalog – Updated in real time and accessible via the AKC website, eliminating the need for paper catalogs.
Reduce wrong class entries – The system would allow only classes appropriate for the dog’s eligibility, based on age, title and division.
3. Benefits
Consistency and standardization: One platform for all AKC events ensures uniformity in entry processes.
Rule compliance: Automatic suspension checks uphold AKC’s integrity and prevent disputes.
Efficiency for clubs: Reduced administrative workload and fewer data correction requests.
Accuracy for exhibitors: Direct database linkage ensures names, titles and breeders are correctly listed.
Environmental Impact: Reduction in paper waste from printed catalogs.
Transparency: Public access to accurate, up-to-date event catalogs builds trust among exhibitors, clubs and spectators.
Entry-fee discount for Breeder of Merit participants will incentivize participation in that program.
4. Implementation Steps
Feasibility study – AKC evaluates existing database and IT infrastructure for integration capabilities.
Software development – Build or contract a secure, scalable event entry system compatible with all AKC registration data.
Pilot program – Launch with select shows to test functionality and gather feedback.
Nationwide rollout – Gradually onboard all clubs, replacing club expense of superintendent-specific entry systems.
Training and support – Provide user-friendly guides and online support for exhibitors and club administrators.
5. Conclusion
This AKC-managed event entry service would modernize the way exhibitors, clubs and AKC interact. It streamlines processes, increases accuracy, enforces rules fairly, and improves the exhibitor experience. Most importantly, it reinforces the AKC’s role as the authoritative, centralized governing body for purebred dog events nationwide.
This is a value-added proposal in response to the AKC fee increase. AKC can do better to give something of value back to the dog community and to demonstrate its appreciation for breeders, who are the backbone of the sport of dogs.
