Farewell, Jeff Pepper

Pat Trotter remembers a good friend and dog man

The world of dogs has suffered a monumental loss with the recent death of Jeff Pepper. If ever there was an individual who gave of himself, Jeff was that person. Generous of spirit, with personal warmth and all resources including valuable time, he was the personification of a true giver.

A well-known international traveler, Jeff was famous for judging all over the world as well as presenting fascinating educational seminars. As an author and educator, his multiple books and lectures will be treasured by all who would enhance their dog knowledge. Jeff was a breeder/exhibitor with former wife Barbara of their beloved Pepperhill Golden Retrievers in the day when dog shows were far more competitive than now, producing more than 60 Golden champions.

When PBGVs entered AKC’s registry in the ’90s, Jeff became a big supporter of the PBGV with his usual enthusiasm. In time, the prototype for this delightful breed became the so-correct Ch. Pepperhill Dehra Charmaine, co-bred with the breed’s master breeder Nick Frost. This alliance with Nick as well as the Inghers continued through multiple litters, producing champions and early winners, establishing the breed as group and all-breed contenders. Jeff was instrumental in bringing together breed experts from all over to breeders’ symposiums held with nationals in those days. In time, his support of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels also entered the picture. And, at the time of his passing, his Cavaliers Hugo and Lorenzo were at his side, along with his lovely Sporting Fields Whippet bitch, Quill — animals who brought him great comfort as the inevitable end neared. It also soothed Jeff to know that his long-time friend and caring companion Sandi Olsen would be there for those four-legged loved ones for their lifetime.

When Take The Lead was launched in 1993 to become a support service for those in the world of dogs whose lives were in danger, it was inevitable that Jeff was among a handful of founders who went all in to be there for dog people in need. Over the years Jeff and AKC’s Mari-Beth O’Neill ran the charity booth at Westminster, selling souvenir sweatshirts, jackets and other items to benefit Take The Lead and its causes, which had expanded in 2016 to cover aid for those dog people who suffered losses due to natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, fires and floods. Because of such movers and shakers, Take The Lead is in a position to help dog people in need for generations to come.

In time Jeff had become very involved with the Dog Judges of America (DJA), when its educational seminars for prospective judges were still being held during Westminster weekend at Madison Square Garden. His hard work within the organization resulted in him becoming the president of DJA — a title he shared with such dearly departed dog people who preceded him as Dr. Robert Smith, Roger Hartinger and Dorothy Macdonald.

He himself was much respected as a judge—  exhibitors appreciated his kindness and knowledge, and because of his persona in the ring show chairs like to hire him, and fellow judges respected his unbiased and knowledgeable opinions. No matter the situation, Jeff was always a gentleman. He judged and lectured all over the world — in Europe, the Orient, Australia and New Zealand and South America as well as the United States. Whether as a dog-show judge or a member of any organization, Jeff’s objectivity and honor were always present.

Jeff enjoyed a lifetime of the classics, ranging from books, to art, music, historical literature and gourmand food and wine. His very essence was that of a Renaissance man. It was on full display on his 80th birthday on June 21, 2024, when close friends celebrated with him, enjoying his warm hospitality and shared love at his well-appointed Boynton Beach, Florida home. The menu was worthy of any epicurean five-star restaurant, as were the accompanying fine wines. Most of all, the camaraderie of his many dog friends in attendance was overwhelmingly awesome. The joy of being with Jeff and his dearest friends who had come from all over the United States to honor him was infectious. As one attendee remarked, “When you’re around Jeff, you just feel the love.”

As a family man, Jeff was always there for his loved ones. His interment in Spring Valley, New York, will be surrounded by his special family and friends who know well to what a good person they pay respects. Seldom is one so universally loved and appreciated as Jeff. Surely the Almighty sent this saintly man to be with us and now has called him home. The following words from the Take The Lead organization say it all:

“Jeffrey’s visionary leadership and steadfast dedication were instrumental in advancing our mission. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward his work to create a more equitable future.”

Donations to honor his contributions to our lives should go to Take The Lead, 131 Washington St., Suite 306, Watertown, New York 13601; (800) 814-1123.
