Question of the Week

If you could save just one trophy or ribbon, what would it be? Part II
Joyce Vanek
Evergreen, CO
My first show dog...(my OES--bred by moi), shown in puppy class awarded Winners Dog! Three point major THAT glorious purple ribbon!!! Also, the first Best in Show red, white, blue rosette awarded to my first PWD.  However, the Best In Show "trophy" was a gigantic box of chocolates... I'm not a chocolate fan... nor are my dogs (not allowed). I shared the chocolates with fellow exhibitors out of a large crystal bowl won by my parrot who went BIS the SAME DAY as my PWD. The parrot's rosette was four-times bigger than PWD's. Wonderful treasures.

My Best and favorite Dog show ribbon is one that was presented to me in 2021, The Shiba National. It was presented In a three black framed shadow box. The win was especially nice as it was judged by Edd Bivin, who I highly Respect.

I would save our Best of Breed framed ribbon/trophy from my national specialty (French Bulldog Club of America). If I had room for two – it would be the Best of Breed ribbon/trophy from the French Bulldog Club of America Top Twenty.

The Westminster Tiffany Sterling Silver bowl for winning the Herding Group.

Mark Jaeger

That's pretty easy - our Best in Specialty from the American Brussels Griffon Association National Specialty in 2012. Only one Griff gets that one in any given year.

The huge silver bowl 20" across, engraved with "In Memory Of Beloved Nimble Footed Halla
AWC Santa Barbara 1977 (it was donated by The Northern California Whippet Club)
won at the American Whippet Club Western Specialty by Ch. Merci Isle The Sting in 1977, from BBX under Bo Bengtson. That began a decades long friendship with Bo and his partner, Paul Lepiane that lasts to this day. I sent a thank you note to the club and got a lovely return note of appreciation for the acknowledgement of the donation, saying noone did that anymore!

It’s what I still have since 1967, a silver Revere bowl. My 75 lb. Basset hound won first place in Novice Obedience in a class of 90-some dogs, a score of 190 in the rain, in a mowed hay field where the poodles, Dobies, the Shelties refused to sit, and the GSDs didn’t get the memo. This was before the OTCH, before Novice A  and B, before the jump heights for Open were adjusted. The CD my hound won that year was the end of his OB career, the jump heights were impossible for a Basset. He was a second-hand dog, incorrigible, too strong for me to walk, so I joined an obedience club, endured the snickers and refused to use the old Koehler method to the instructor’s frustration. That dog made me a trainer.  My PBGVs have won a lot of awards over the years, and I am immensely proud of not only some very big wins, but also their work as certified SAR dogs, but that Revere bowl is what I will always cherish.

There is no question regarding my favorite trophy. It has had a place of honor on my mantel since the mid-eighties.  At the Trenton Kennel Club  Show, I breeder - owner - handled my Newfoundland bitch to her championship finishing with her fourth major (5, 5, 4, 5 point wins).  On the same day, this same bitch won High in Trial, and that win’s trophy was presented in the Best of Show ring.  The trophy was a Boehm porcelain Snowy Owl.  I was and still am an avid bird enthusiast - so double the pleasure!  That same bitch, Ch Kilyka’s Sibyl UD, went on to win BOS at the Newfoundland Club of America’s National Specialty in 1988, but the Owl remains my favorite trophy.

My most treasured item is the Best in Show framed picture of “Hooli” aka BIS/BISS CH Ballymera’s Whisperin’ Secrets, ROM (pictured).
Hooli is the #6 Champion Producing Sire in Irish Setter history. He was also the Foundation Sire for WindRose Irish Setters.  At 7 months old he contracted Parvo and complications that kept him hospitalized for months. Once he was well, he was able to show, and finished from AmBred in 6 weeks, including 3 Specialty Best of Winners and Best of Breed from AmBred.  He was undefeated Best Sire in every Specialty he entered. If I could save one really memorable trophy it would be the Versatility Award I received from the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America with my heart dog, home bred AKC/UKC/CKC BIS BISS Sandcastle's Kutting Edge, CDX, HSas (HIT), RE.  We qualified in Herding, Obedience and were BOS at our National Specialty in Bozeman, Montana, 1993 I think.  I did it myself!  A huge accomplishment for me as I had never gotten a herding title or OB leg before.
