Keep an eye on those club treasuries.

Semen Ownership
The recent announcement that the American Kennel Club has created the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank has been underwhelmingly received by the breeders they hope will participate. We understand the reservations expressed by the fancy, that the frozen semen they have collected from their dogs, if owned by the American Kennel Club, will be used on unknown bitches, owned by unknown breeders approved by unknown persons from the parent club or the American Kennel Club. This is both an emotional and rational decision. But as it is explained at present, it does seem doomed.
Summer and Ticks
The extreme weather patterns that have affected every part of our country show no signs of lessening. The extreme heat reminds us to take extra precautions when traveling to and from and while at the dog show: keeping a vigilant eye on our dogs and supplying them with adequate water and ice. Whether they are in a van, motorhome or under the tents, the sun changes positions and the temperature rises very quickly. Shade, water and common sense go a long way. Stay cool.
Another issue created by the mild winter in some parts of the country is the increased spread of where ticks are found and the diseases they carry. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that hundreds of thousands of people are now infected from a tick bite that results in meat allergies. So, along with keeping you and your dogs hydrated, you must be persistent in thoroughly checking yourself and your dogs for ticks. Apologies to our vegetarian and vegan friends, but imagine never being able to eat meat again because of a tick bite.
Club Treasuries
Sad to say, but there have been those among us who have larceny in their hearts. A club member is given access to the club's checkbook and is the only authorized signature on club checks that are written. That’s the first mistake. Too many times, we hear of club members helping themselves to their kennel club’s treasury, in some cases cleaning out the whole bank account. Because it involves people we know, the incident is covered over by the club, or the individual pays back the money or, on the rarest of occasions, is prosecuted. It’s all so avoidable and it is the club’s responsibility to protect the funds. The American Kennel Club does give solid advice on financial protection. For example, insuring the club treasurer and board members against misappropriation of funds through a crime policy or bonding, and requiring double signatures on checks over $250. Further information can be found in the AKC Managing Club Finances document.
