The world-famous New Yorker magazine, one of the most respected and well-read magazines worldwide, has, to put it mildly, Gone to the Dogs. In celebration of the magazine’s 100th anniversary, the AKC Museum of the Dog will host an exhibition from a private collection of 100 years of dogs that have graced the covers of the magazine. Some of the artists whose works appear on the covers include Peter Arno, James Thurber, Charles Addams, Helen Hokinson and Mark Ulriksen. Forty-four covers in all will be on exhibit. There will be related information and commentary concerning some covers, and also included are themes of dog shows, grooming and other related topics. The exhibition, which runs from September 4 through December 7, will also include a section of covers centered on the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Alan Fausel, curator of the Dog Museum, was quoted as saying, “We are thrilled to celebrate with the New Yorker their 100th anniversary and share the special dynamic between dogs and such an esteemed publication.” Those of you who are unfamiliar with the employees of the Dog Museum will recognize Alan’s name as one of the appraisers on PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow” series. The dogs have gone to the AKC Museum of the Dog, which begs the question: Have you? The AKC Museum of the Dog is our combined and united statement to the public at large about the important part that dogs play in our everyday lives. It celebrates the joy of dog ownership in a vibrant and modern space filled centuries of dog art. It houses a one-of-a-kind collection of dog art and memorabilia that is second to none. If you have never visited the museum or haven't returned in a while, now is the time. It is also the time to think about what happens to your valuable dog-art collection when you pass away. It took many years and lots of hard work to bring the museum back to New York. We all need to support it with donations of money and related artwork. Later this year the Dog Museum will host an exhibition honoring the 150th anniversary of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Last year, former American Kennel Club president Dennis Sprung kept the museum open during the Westminster Kennel Club dog show weekend to afford those visitors to New York an opportunity to visit the museum. Hopefully, that will be repeated for this coming dog show. We need to support this worthy and invaluable institution.
