The skies are about to be friendlier to pets ... again

Recently the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB posted an employment opening for a new field-representative position to replace the retired and now very active multiple-group judge JIMMY MITCHELL. I’m told there is one interesting, well-known person showing interest in the position. ...

But just as that opening is announced, there will soon be a second position opening very soon. Field representative CLIFF STEELE has tendered his resignation effective the end of May. The endless travel to show weekends of four and five days, added to the paperwork at home, is keeping CLIFF away from his family and young son. He certainly was a great hire, with his varied years of experience as a breeder, professional handler and judge. But as the number of shows has grown, so has the reps’ work. What started as a weekend job is now what amounts to a seven-day-a-week job. All of us at DOG NEWS wish CLIFF the best of luck. ...

As for the aforementioned JIMMY MITCHELL, he’s flying off to South Korea for a judging assignment, while WOOD WORNALL and BARBARA BENTLEY are taking in the sights in Budapest, where WOODY was judging. ...

Speaking of travel, PET AIRWAYS, a national airline based in Delray Beach, Florida, was established in 2009 to transport pets. They ceased flying two years later, in 2011, owing to financial difficulties, after successfully transporting more than 9,000 pets on flights that carried up to 50 pets plus attendants. The company recently announced that they plan to start flying again in 2022. Their flights serviced smaller airports located near large cities (i.e., Midway Airport for Chicago) with prices that ranged from $150 to $1,200, depending on size; that averaged to $500 per pet. ...

The dates for the FCI’S 2022 WORLD DOG SHOWS aren't making it easy for those of you wanting to either exhibit or attend the two that are planned for this year. First up, the WORLD DOG SHOW in MADRID, SPAIN, will take place June 24-26, starting the day after the WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB dog show, which ends on June 23; the WORLD DOG SHOW in SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, taking place on December 10 and 11 conflicts with the start of the Orlando cluster. Bad timing, as those two cities are world class, and not to mention it’s an opportunity to see different breeds of dogs and meet breeders of our own breeds. ...

We were sorry to hear of the passing of CHARLIE WESTFIELD, JR., the son of well-known Bulldoggers the late EILEEN & CHARLIE WESTFIELD. CHARLIE, JR., was a veterinarian from New Jersey who was the show vet at the TUXEDO PARK, SOMERSET HILLS, WESTCHESTER weekend. Our deepest sympathies to his family.
