AKC Announces 2022 Breeders of the Year, Geir Flyckt-Pedersen tops Westminster panel

The AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB has announced its honorees for the 2022 BREEDER OF THE YEAR AWARDS. The seven nominees represent the seven variety groups. Representing the Sporting Group are DENNIS & KATEY BROWN of Bolivia Pointers; representing the Hound Group are MARGARET MOTT & SALLY P. SIMMONDS of Kamgaard Norwegian Elkhounds; representing the Working Group JUDITH M. RUSSELL of Karnovanda Siberian Huskies; representing the Terrier Group are GERI KELLY & SUZANNE STEELE of Kelly’s Miniature Schnauzers; representing the Toy Group are KIM CALVACCA & ROBIN GREENSLADE of KimRo Miniature Pinschers; representing the Non-Sporting Group are BOB, NANCY, BRENDA & LINK NEWCOMB of Newcomb Bulldogs, and representing the Herding Group is GLORIA F. BIRCH of Covy-Tucker Hill German Shepherds. DOG NEWS congratulates these outstanding breeders for their dedication and decades devoted to their respective breeds.

The WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB released its judging slate for the 2023 dog show. The panel is headed by Norwegian-born GEIR FLYCKT-PEDERSEN. GEIR and his late wife NEENA lived in Norway, Sweden and England before settling in the United States. Their interest was in several breeds, but Wire Fox Terriers are what they’re best known for on this side of the Atlantic. GEIR’S judging credit credentials are impeccable. Having judged all over the world, included in his resume is Terrier Group judging at CRUFTS and now Best in Show at WESTMINSTER, where he has judged the Terrier Group. It makes him the first person to have judged the Terrier Group at both CRUFTS and WESTMINSTER and then go on to judge Best in Show at Westminster. An honor that not even his best friend PETER GREEN can claim, though PETER can claim judging Best in Show at both Crufts and Westminster. But GEIR is young, so there is still time. Here at DOG NEWS we are proud to count GEIR among our feature columnists. And we all wish him a great line-up come the evening of May 9. As news of his WESTMINSTER assignment was made public, GEIR flew off to Amsterdam, where he was judging. So the messages of congratulations from around the world will be waiting for him on his return. ...

Three ladies recently passed away. ELAINE YOUNG, Terrier Group and multiple breed judge, has passed away. Longtime member of the Seattle Kennel Club, she was a former delegate and a board of director of the American Kennel Club. Fanciers of the Pacific Northwest also knew and had occasion to visit the Chinese restaurant owner by ELAINE that was a must on anyone’s visit to Seattle. Our deepest sympathies to her family. SUE WEISS, Welsh Terrier breeder, exhibitor and judge, has passed away. Our deepest sympathies to her children. Newfoundland breeder and exhibitor KAREN CAESAR has passed away. Our deepest sympathies to her husband BILL and family.
