Westminster planning, judges seminars in Louisville, Mark Cocozza passes

Now that the dust has settled on the AKC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW and we are settling into the new year, our thoughts are turning to the upcoming WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB. Although the hotels nearest to the USTA BILLIE JEAN KING NATIONAL TENNIS CENTER are booked, there are alternatives close by. It’s close enough to Manhattan to incorporate restaurants and Broadway theatre into your weekend plans. One show you might consider is the STEPHEN SONDHEIM musical MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. An interesting story-line twist: The show starts at the end of the story and works backward. The show has extended its run until July, so tickets are available. It stars, among others, HARRY POTTER himself, DANIEL RADCLIFFE. ...

The ADSJ (AMERICAN DOG SHOW JUDGES) ADVANCED JUDGES INSTITUTE, to be held at the Kentuckiana Cluster of dog shows in Louisville on March 14 through 17, is now open for non-ADSJ members to register. It will focus on the Non-Sporting and Herding groups. For further information and reservations, contact DAVID MILLER at jlaplan488@aol.com or visit the website at americandogshowjudges.org. ...

Don’t forget if you are in or around New York City, MEET THE BREEDS is being held at the Javits Center on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28. Last year more than 25,000 spectators attend this two-day celebration of purebred dogs. ...

We first met some 30 years ago in England, while we were houseguests of MARION SPAVIN. From a guy with a Dachshund he matured into a dashing Londoner who was controversial, outspoken and yet a sophisticated and charming man, and who became a well-known and popular judge around the world, including here in States. I’ll miss his candor and sharp sense of humor, and all of us at DOG NEWS send our deepest sympathies to his partner MARK STEWARD and his many friends. ...
