It’s back in town, just like a Broadway revival: MEET THE BREEDS returns to the Big Apple’s JAVITS CENTER for a two-day event on January 28 and 29, 2023, after a two-year absence. Everything from Affenpinschers to Yorkshire Terriers will be on hand for the public to see and discuss future ownership. This is the single most important purebred dog experience for the public, for it gives them a hands-on experience that a dog show cannot offer. Seeing breeds in different stages of their lives, as far as size, coat care and nutrition are concerned, gives a prospective buyer greater knowledge when purchasing, with a smaller percentage of buyer remorse. ...

One wonders if the American Kennel Club ever entertained the idea of moving its AKC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP dog show to the Javits Center to be held in conjunction with their MEET THE BREEDS. One only has to look at the sold-out WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB dog show year after year to see that there is a much large audience there than in Orlando. It does seem a natural. ...

Speaking of the AKC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, it is nice and only fitting that this year’s dog show will be held in memory of the late RON MENAKER, whose idea it was to have the American Kennel Club hold its own event. RON worked hard to see it come to life. ...

CANINE COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME (CCDS) is said to affect 14 to 35 percent of the dog population and almost all dogs over the age of 16, according to the MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION newsletter. With this informationthe MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION is collaborating with the MAYO CLINIC in Arizona and the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA IRVINE, among others, with samples from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. Tissue from 200 dogs in combination will be submitted with behavioral questionnaires to be completed by the dogs’ owners. This study will not only benefit dogs but can help in the research to cure Alzheimer’s disease.
